Canva animation disappears from the downloaded file
Choose a motion format, confirm the right pages, and separate an export problem from a preview or destination that only shows a still image.
If the design moves in Canva but the saved file is a still image, check Share > Download > File type. Choose MP4 Video for a video file or GIF for an animated image. PNG and JPG are still-image downloads; changing their resolution will not preserve motion.

Check the page before changing the design
Play the affected page in Canva's preview. Watch the part that should move rather than judging the page thumbnail. If it is already stationary there, downloading again does not tell you whether the animation was applied correctly.
If the preview moves, reopen Download and confirm the page selection. A multi-page design may be set to download only the current page or a custom selection. Canva also lets you retain download settings, so a previous static-format choice can carry into your next download. The current controls are listed in Canva's video and GIF guide.
Download just the affected page under a new filename. This gives you a small comparison file and prevents an older download from being mistaken for the new one.
Match the file to its destination
| What you need | What to download | What to check afterward |
|---|---|---|
| A clip for a video player or upload | MP4 Video | Play the saved file through the animated section. |
| A moving image for a destination that accepts animated GIFs | GIF | Open the file in a browser and watch the full cycle. |
| A static image | PNG or JPG | Motion is not part of this output. |
Canva's file-type guide distinguishes these formats. It also warns that animations and embedded videos are not supported in its PowerPoint and Word downloads. An animated design exported as PPTX is therefore a different problem from a failed MP4 export.
A file preview or upload thumbnail can show a single frame. Open the actual downloaded file before editing the design again. If the local file moves but the uploaded version does not, investigate the destination's accepted formats and playback behavior. Re-exporting the unchanged design will not establish what the destination does with it.
If the download is blocked or still stationary
For Canva Free, keep MP4 quality at its default when an upgrade prompt appears after changing quality. Canva's current video-download documentation says even choosing a lower resolution can trigger that prompt; it is not necessarily an export failure.
If the correct page moves in the editor but a newly downloaded MP4 remains stationary in a player, use the "I can't download my design or video" support link in Canva's video guide. Report the file type, selected page, whether preview playback moves, and whether another player behaves the same way. Do not make a private client design public just to share a support example.
If motion works but the output is soft, use the separate Canva image-quality guide.
