Canva downloads look blurry: check the file, text, and source images

Check the downloaded file before the upload

Compare one small text line, one shape edge, and one photo. If text and shapes are sharp but the photo is soft, concentrate on that photo. If everything is soft, check the page and export dimensions first. These comparisons are diagnostic suggestions, not measured Canva test results.

Choose the branch that matches the symptom

For a static design with small text or graphics, try Share > Download > PNG. Keep the same design so the comparison changes one variable at a time. Canva documents that download path on its PNG guide.

Compare the saved file’s pixel dimensions with the intended placement. For example, a 600-pixel-wide image displayed at 1200 pixels wide is being enlarged twofold. Changing a DPI label alone does not add the missing pixels. Use dimensions suited to the actual destination rather than a universal export size.

Canva’s download reference distinguishes JPG for photos, PNG for graphics, and PDF Print for print output. Size, quality, compression, and some related controls are plan-dependent. If a control is absent, do not assume the account is broken or that a paid upgrade will fix a poor source. Download file types

If the Download panel offers Compress or Limit size, note whether either is selected. Compare one page without a strict file-size limit before changing the whole design. Canva says a size limit can make other quality options unavailable. The control names and availability depend on your account; use what your own panel shows.

Check the source image separately

Open the original upload at the size you need. If it already lacks detail, a larger Canva download cannot reveal detail that was not there. Prefer the original photo over a small preview, cropped screenshot, or repeatedly saved copy. A tight crop uses fewer of the source image’s pixels. Judge the cropped region at its final displayed size, not just the dimensions of the uncropped original.

Check the destination and print conditions

If the local file is clear, compare the version after upload at the same displayed size. A platform may resize or compress images. Increasing the Canva export repeatedly may increase file size without changing that destination’s output.

For print, use the printer’s requested format, dimensions, and bleed requirements. A PDF Print export does not repair a low-resolution photograph. Review a proof before ordering a batch.
