Canva shared design is read-only: check account and edit access

Check the invited account, Canva team, and sharing permission when an entire design opens without editing controls.

Quick answer

A shared design needs edit access before you can change it. Open the invitation with the account and Canva team the owner invited, then have the owner check your permission. View or comment access will still leave the design read-only.

Check the invited account and its permission

First agree whether you should edit the shared original or work on your own copy. Changes to the original affect the other collaborators.

Is the whole design read-only?

Try selecting ordinary text and an image. If you can edit most of the page but one object is unavailable, the problem is probably narrower than the invitation. These checks are for a design where editing is unavailable throughout.

Also check the design title and invitation link. A forwarded link can point to a different copy from the one the owner intended to share.

Switch to the right account or team

Canva lists both the wrong account and the wrong team in its shared-design troubleshooting.

Check the email address that received the invitation. In Canva's profile menu, confirm the selected team and switch to the invited team if needed. Reopen the original invitation after switching.

There is no need to move the design between teams to troubleshoot access. Establish which team owns it first.

Ask the owner to check Share

The owner can open the design, choose Share, and find your email under People with access. If you should be editing, they can select the editing permission for that address. See Canva's sharing instructions.

Use access for the intended collaborators. Making the design editable by anyone with a link is unnecessary and could expose the original to unwanted changes.

When the permission already says you can edit

An organization may restrict designs shared from outside its team. Ask the administrator to check the invitation against that policy. A custom-font restriction can also affect part of a design without making the entire file read-only.

After access changes, reopen the same invitation with the intended account. Make a small, agreed edit and check that it appears in the shared original rather than a separate copy.

If editing works but a font upload does not, follow Canva font upload checks.
