Canva keeps selecting the wrong element

Select it from Layers

First check whether you can edit another ordinary element on the same page. If nothing is editable, start with Canva edit-access checks; rearranging layers will not change your permission.

Find the object without dismantling the page

Select an accessible element to show the editor toolbar, then choose Position and its Layers tab. Canva's template guidance documents this route, and its Layers overview explains how the list exposes covered, grouped, and locked objects.

Select the row for the text, shape, or image you meant to edit. Before dragging, compare the selection outline with the object's expected size. A page-sized outline when you intended to select a small label is a reason to stop and inspect the selected item again.

If the object only needs a text correction, leave its layer order alone. Bringing every edited item to the front can cover a logo, decorative border, or another label.

When several objects move together

Canva lets you edit an element while keeping its group intact:

1. Select the group.
2. Select the individual element inside it.
3. Move, rotate, or resize that element as needed.

Use Ungroup only when you actually want to separate the objects. The current grouping help distinguishes editing within a group from breaking it apart.

Change the stacking order only if it is wrong

In Position, use Forward or Backward for a smaller adjustment; To front or the back option moves the element across the stack. Available options depend on its current position. Afterward, inspect nearby text and overlapping edges, not just the item you moved.

If Layers identifies the object as locked, ask the template owner which parts may be changed before altering its structure. An image containing a picture of text may also be a single object rather than editable text.
