Google Drive ownership transfer is unavailable or pending
Check the current owner, account types, and pending invitation before trying to hand over a file in My Drive.
In the file's Share dialog, confirm that your account is the owner. An editor cannot change ownership. A work or school owner can transfer within the same organization; a personal account cannot hand ownership to a work or school account through this workflow.

Google Drive in a computer browser; files in My Drive. Personal accounts and transfers within one work or school organization have different rules. Shared drives are outside this procedure.
Check the account pair first
Identify what is actually missing
Open Share on the specific file and read the roles under People with access. Match your signed-in address to the owner entry. If someone else owns it, ask that person to handle the transfer; changing general access to public is not a solution. Google's sharing permissions table distinguishes editing rights from ownership.
Also confirm that both people are discussing the same file. Compare the file link, not just its name: two copies can have identical names but different owners. Do not copy client or organization files into a personal account to get around a transfer restriction.
Send or resolve the transfer
Google's ownership instructions require the file to be shared with the recipient first. On Drive's website, right-click it, choose Share > Share, then use the arrow beside that person's name and select Transfer ownership.
For personal accounts, the recipient must accept. They can search Drive for pendingowner:me, open the file's Share dialog, and review the ownership request. The current owner can cancel a pending transfer from the recipient's role menu. Transfers within a work or school organization do not require that acceptance step.
Before repeating a request, check the role shown beside the recipient. A pending request and an unavailable transfer option are different problems. Sending another file link will not make an unsupported account pair eligible.
Verify the handover file by file
After the transfer, reopen Share and confirm the intended address is labeled Owner. Have the recipient open the file from the original link before considering the handover complete.
Transferring a folder does not transfer ownership of the files inside it. For a project handover, make a short list of the actual deliverables and inspect their owner entries individually. Do not infer completion from the folder label alone.
If an eligible transfer remains unavailable, ask your Workspace administrator or use Need more help? on Google's ownership page. Include the account types and visible status, but redact addresses in public community posts. For a recipient who cannot even open the file, start with the access-denied checks.
