Keep Word and Excel uploads in their original format in Google Drive
Separate automatic upload conversion from Office editing, so a client delivery stays a Word document or Excel workbook.
Open Google Drive Settings on a computer and clear Convert uploads to Google Docs editor format if you want new Office uploads to retain their format. Opening a Word file in Google's editor does not by itself prove that it was converted: Office editing can save changes in the original format.

Turn off upload conversion before uploading
Keep the local .docx or .xlsx master until you have checked the uploaded item. Renaming a Google document to end in .docx is not a format conversion.
Check the setting with a separate upload
- Open Drive settings in the Google account used for the project.
- Find the upload-conversion checkbox and leave it unchecked.
- Use New > File upload to upload a small Office file with a distinctive name into a private test folder.
- Open the uploaded item and inspect the file-extension indicator beside its name in the editor. Download it and open that copy in Word or Excel before uploading the client deliverable.
Google's upload instructions describe the conversion setting. Changing it controls the upload workflow; it does not turn an existing Google document back into the original Office file.
Use a separate filename for this check. Drive can treat an upload with the same name as a new revision of an existing file, so a diagnostic upload should not replace a shared working document.
An Office file can still open in Google's editor
Google's Office-file guide distinguishes these operations:

The editor's appearance alone is therefore a poor format check. Follow the particular file, its extension indicator, and the copy you download.
If you already have two working versions
Compare the Office original and the converted copy before choosing which one to deliver. Do not delete either while collaborators may have newer edits in it. Check a table, a formula result, and any layout feature that matters for the handoff; retaining an extension does not establish perfect feature compatibility.
