Google Drive preview looks wrong or is unavailable: check the original
Check whether the problem is in Drive's preview or in the file itself, without overwriting the uploaded version.
A poor or missing Google Drive preview does not necessarily mean the file is damaged. Drive can store files it cannot fully preview, and previews may be scaled down. Download a trusted file and open it in its intended application before converting it or replacing the upload.

Open the file in its intended app
Keep the existing Drive item and your local master while comparing them. If Drive warns that a file is suspicious, do not bypass the warning just to complete this check.
Compare the same page or detail
Look at the specific problem: small text is blurry, a page has changed shape, an element is missing, or the preview will not open. Compare that same area in the downloaded file and, if available, the original you uploaded.
Google's file-type guidance distinguishes storage from preview support. Even a supported format may contain features that the preview does not display exactly as the original app does.

A visual comparison can locate the problem, but it does not check every byte of the file.
Keep viewing and conversion separate
Opening a file in another app is different from converting it. Google's viewing instructions explain the available options. Opening a PDF preview in a new tab rather than the current tab does not change the document's format.
For confidential files, use an app already approved for the work. Connecting an unfamiliar conversion service just to obtain a preview adds an unnecessary copy of the document elsewhere.
If a client needs a PDF delivery, export a separate PDF and inspect it while retaining the editable source. A troublesome Drive preview alone is not a reason to overwrite that source.
If the preview still will not open
Use the help options in Google's viewing guide, noting the file format and whether the downloaded copy opens correctly. If you cannot get that copy, start with Drive download troubleshooting.
