CapCut desktop cannot find media to import: check the local file before the project
Separate an empty import view from an unavailable local file, then compare one known file before changing an existing edit.
If CapCut's import view is empty, first locate the intended photo or video in Finder or File Explorer and confirm that it opens. An empty media view does not prove the file was deleted. Separate a missing local file, an import category that excludes it, and a file that is listed but rejected.
In this guide
CapCut Desktop on Windows and macOS, before a new photo or video is imported. Album labels and file pickers vary by release. Phone photo-library permissions, cloud project recovery, and relinking an existing timeline are separate workflows.
Check whether the file exists outside CapCut
Keep the source and existing project unchanged. Do not reinstall the app, remove cloud files, or delete an established timeline just to diagnose the import view.
Make a small local comparison
CapCut's missing-assets help recommends trying files in a local computer folder rather than directly from an external drive or cloud-synced location.
Copy one permitted sample into a clearly named local folder that is not managed by your sync service. Preserve the original location. Confirm the copied file opens outside CapCut before selecting it in the import workflow.
This comparison asks a narrow question: does CapCut see the local copy when it cannot see the original location? It is not a recommendation to move an entire media library or proof that external storage is generally unsupported.
Match the symptom to the next check
| What you see | What to compare next |
|---|---|
| The file is absent in Finder or File Explorer too | The source location or whether it was downloaded |
| Photos are absent while videos are listed | Any active media-category filter |
| Nothing appears immediately | Whether the view is still loading |
| A filename is visible but importing it gives an error | Record that error; this is beyond an empty-view symptom |
| A local copy imports but the original does not | The availability of the original location |
CapCut documents that a Videos category can exclude photos. If your installed import view has category tabs, select the appropriate one. Do not search for phone-specific album controls in a desktop file picker that does not offer them.
The same help page notes that large collections can take longer to appear. Allow the view to finish loading before repeatedly reopening it. If it remains empty, preserve your work, restart CapCut, and repeat the same local-file comparison. Loading times vary. Check guidance for your desktop release rather than applying phone-specific version advice.
After a successful import
Check that the imported asset is the intended take or image, not another file with a similar name. For video, inspect more than the thumbnail: compare an identifiable moment, duration, and sound if it contains audio. A visible filename alone is not a completed content check.
Keep the comparison file in place while deciding which copy the real project should use. Avoid immediately moving or removing the file that just worked. If an established project already has missing media, treat that as a separate dependency problem rather than repeating a new-file import blindly.
For a failure later in the workflow, use the desktop export guide. A cloud project missing from Spaces is covered by the account and workspace checks.
What to send to support
Use contact us in CapCut's official missing-assets page with your desktop app version, OS, file extension, original location type, and the local-copy result. Include the exact error if one appears, with private filenames removed from screenshots.
