After Effects missing footage: relink files without rebuilding the edit
Find the original media, restore its project reference, and check every affected composition before replacing more files.
If the original media still exists, reconnect the missing Project-panel item with Replace Footage > File instead of deleting its layers and starting over. Save a project copy first, and choose the exact original asset. Replacing a shared source can change every composition that uses it.
In this guide
After Effects desktop on Windows and macOS; local project files and accessible source media. This does not recover deleted or damaged files, bypass cloud permissions, or resolve missing fonts and plug-ins.
Establish whether the source is available
A missing-footage warning means After Effects cannot find the referenced source where it expects it. Start outside the app: confirm that the drive is connected, the folder is accessible, and the file is actually present. For cloud storage, make sure the needed media is downloaded locally before trying to relink it.
Search for the original filename, but compare duration, dimensions, and content before accepting a match. Two cameras or job folders can contain different files with the same name. Do not rename an unrelated clip simply to satisfy the missing path.
If the original was deleted, relinking cannot reconstruct it. Check an existing backup or ask the person who supplied the project for the source package. Keep the current project intact while doing so.
Reconnect one missing item
- Save a separate copy of the project.
- In the Project panel, search for missing to narrow the list.
- Select a missing footage item and choose File > Replace Footage > File.
- Locate the original source and open it.
- Clear the search and inspect the affected compositions before proceeding.
After Effects keeps the existing project references and layer work when the correct source replaces the placeholder. Adobe documents this behavior in working with footage items.
Verify what the replacement changed
Check more than the first frame. Compare the beginning, a middle edit point, and the end of each important use. Confirm that time remapping, masks, and effects still relate to the intended subject. A successful path match is not proof that you selected the correct take.
Adobe's relinking tutorial distinguishes replacing a Project-panel source across compositions from swapping a single layer. This distinction matters in templates: fixing one shared logo source may be exactly right, but substituting a different clip there may unintentionally change several scenes.
For a deliberate one-layer replacement, work in a duplicate project and follow the layer-replacement method in Adobe's importing and interpreting guide. That is a different task from reconnecting the original file.
When the warning remains
Re-run the missing search after each group of files. Media from another folder or drive may require another relink. An image sequence also needs its remaining frames; finding one image does not prove the whole sequence is available.
If the file exists but cannot be read, record the import error and source format. Avoid repeatedly changing file extensions, deleting placeholders, or removing unused footage while diagnosis is unfinished. Those changes can make the original dependency harder to trace.

For Adobe After Effects support, provide your app version, OS, missing filename, its expected location, and whether a fresh project can import that same file. Do not upload client media publicly without permission.
This is a documentation-based workflow. We have not tested a relink on your project and cannot promise recovery of unavailable source media.
