After Effects export has a black background instead of transparency

Check the composition before exporting again

Show the transparency grid in the Composition viewer and inspect the area that should be empty. Look for a background solid, imported image, or precomposition that covers it. Turning on the grid only changes the viewing aid; it does not remove an opaque layer.

Make changes in a project copy. Temporarily disable a suspected background layer and inspect several frames, including transitions. If the area is opaque inside After Effects, changing export settings alone will not create the missing transparency. Include alpha in the output

Select the composition and choose Composition > Add to Render Queue. In the Render Queue, click the underlined preset name beside Output Module to open its settings.

Choose a format and codec that support alpha, then set Channels to RGB + Alpha. For a PNG-sequence handoff, select the PNG sequence format and check that same channel setting. If the chosen format does not offer RGB + Alpha, choose a compatible output instead of changing the composition's background color.

A QuickTime container alone does not establish codec support for transparency. Check the actual format options rather than assuming the current preset includes alpha.

Use a new output filename and render a short section first. Adobe documents the channels setting and its format limitations in rendering and exporting. If your delivery format cannot carry alpha, agree on a compatible intermediate with the recipient instead of repeatedly exporting the same preset.

Consider an image sequence for a handoff

A PNG sequence is an option when the next application accepts image sequences. Enable alpha in the output settings and use a dedicated output folder. This creates multiple numbered image files, not one movie, so confirm that the recipient can import the sequence at the intended frame rate. Send the entire sequence, not only the first frame.

Separate missing transparency from an edge halo

Reimport the exported file into After Effects and put it above a colored layer. If the background shows through but edges have dark or light fringes, the problem may be alpha interpretation rather than absent alpha.

Check File > Interpret Footage > Main for the imported item. Match Straight or Premultiplied interpretation to how the asset was written; guessing repeatedly can hide one edge problem while introducing another. Do not use a color key to remove a black background until you know whether valid transparency already exists.

If the destination still shows black

Give the recipient a small sample and record the exact format, codec, channel setting, and destination application. Ask whether the destination accepts alpha in that format. For an After Effects-specific failure, start with Adobe After Effects Help.
