After Effects export stalls in Media Encoder: isolate the handoff

Make the comparison useful

Record the exact versions of both apps, the output format, and whether the stalled position is repeatable. Use a new filename in a writable local folder with sufficient free space. Keep the same short range for each comparison so the scene complexity does not change along with the export method.

A slow frame is not automatically a crashed export. Watch whether frames or elapsed progress continue to change and record the last error if one appears. Avoid launching several full-length retries at once; that adds load while making the results harder to interpret.

Check the app pair before changing preferences

Adobe's Media Encoder export troubleshooting page specifically covers compositions that stall early or render extremely slowly. Its first check is the After Effects and Media Encoder version pairing.

Record the existing versions before updating, and keep a project backup. For a production job with third-party plug-ins, confirm their compatibility before changing versions. Do not mix a beta application into this comparison simply because its version number is newer.

Use the Render Queue as a diagnostic branch

Render a short sample directly from After Effects. Inspect that file before choosing it as a delivery fallback. If the sample succeeds, you have evidence that this range can render through that route; you have not established that every frame or another preset will succeed.

For an ordinary opaque MP4, current After Effects supports H.264 in the Render Queue. Open the output module, select H.264, and inspect Format Options and any settings-mismatch warning. Adobe documents the current workflow in H.264 export. Media Encoder is not automatically required just to create that file type.

If you need alpha, high-quality intermediates, or specific delivery settings, choose a format that meets those requirements instead of accepting an MP4 solely because it finishes.

Try a targeted Media Encoder comparison

For the early-stall behavior Adobe describes, add the composition through Composition > Add to Render Queue, then Queue in AME. In Media Encoder's General preferences, try disabling Enable Parallel Encoding if that option is available. Record the original value and compare the same short range.

Recheck the output format, preset, and channel requirements in Media Encoder before starting the comparison. After Effects' Output Module format and color-channel settings do not transfer through Queue in AME, even though the output filename and location do. Adobe's handoff limitation matters when comparing two export routes: an unnoticed preset change can make them produce different deliverables.

Adobe also lists a Software Only renderer comparison where supported. Treat it as a diagnostic setting, not a promise of faster output. Change one setting at a time. Preference resets or clean reinstalls should wait until you have preserved custom presets and followed support guidance for your exact version.
