Word has a blank final page: identify the paragraph or break before deleting it

Reveal what is creating the page

Check the page in print preview too. The target is an unwanted page in the actual document, not simply extra space around a page in the editing window. Note the original page count and the last visible line so you can compare after one change.

Show the marks and choose the right branch

Microsoft's blank-page guide uses Ctrl + Shift + 8 on Windows or Command + 8 on Mac to show paragraph marks.

Do not select the whole document for a fix intended for one empty paragraph. That could change every heading and body paragraph while leaving the original cause unclear.

If the end paragraph is the cause

Select the final paragraph mark and set its font size to 1 point, following Microsoft's guide. The intention is to fit that required mark onto the previous page. Then inspect the last real content again.

If the empty paragraph has Page break before enabled, the guide also describes clearing it in Paragraph Settings > Lines and Page Breaks. Apply that check to the affected paragraph only. Avoid shrinking the entire document's margins as an early experiment, especially when a client or printer requires specific dimensions.

If a break is responsible

Before deleting a section break, understand the effect: Microsoft says the sections merge and the resulting section takes the formatting of the section that followed the break. This can affect a carefully arranged document. See Microsoft's section-break warning.

A manual page break is a different item. If it is genuinely unnecessary, select that identified break and delete it in the saved copy. For a section break, first decide whether the boundary preserves something you still need. Follow the appropriate Windows or Mac instructions in Microsoft's section-break article only after that decision.

If you cannot explain why the boundary exists, keep it while asking the document owner or support. A blank final page is less costly than silently changing a report's layout before delivery.

Check the whole delivery, not just the page count

After the change, compare the final content, headers, footers, page numbering, and page orientation with the original. If you deliver a PDF, inspect that exported file as well. A lower page count alone is not proof that the content remained intact.
