Photoshop cannot save a document larger than 2 GB
Save a large layered master as PSB without flattening the only editable copy, and separate format limits from storage errors.
If Photoshop reports that a document exceeds the PSD size limit, try File > Save As > Large Document Format (PSB). PSD supports files up to 2 GB. PSB is the large-document option; flattening the only editable master is not the first step.

Keep the layers and change the file format
Leave the document open until you have a saved copy you can reopen. Choose a new filename and a destination with enough free space, so you preserve any earlier working file.
Read the error before choosing a workaround
An error mentioning the file format or the 2 GB limit points toward PSB. An error about a full drive or a scratch disk needs a storage check as well. Record the exact message instead of treating every failed save as the same problem.
Adobe's large-document guidance covers documents above 2 GB or 30,000 pixels in a dimension and warns that sufficient disk space is still required. Changing the extension cannot create more space.
Save an editable master
- Choose File > Save As and select Large Document Format (PSB) from the format list.
- Give the file a distinct name, such as
poster-master-large.psb, and save it to your chosen location. - Once saving has finished, reopen the saved file in Photoshop. Inspect the layer stack and several important elements: editable text, a mask edge, and an adjustment you may need to revise.
- Keep the previous master until this inspection is complete. A file merely appearing in the destination folder is not enough evidence that it contains the work you expect.
PSB preserves Photoshop features such as layers, effects, and masks. Adobe lists support for documents up to 300,000 pixels in either dimension, while also noting compatibility limits with other applications and some plug-ins. See the supported image formats reference.
Send a delivery copy separately
A saved PSB can still be the wrong file to send to a client or printer. Ask which format their application accepts before uploading a very large master. Keep the layered PSB and create the requested delivery file separately; do not rename .psb to .psd to make it look compatible.
If you only need a flattened JPEG for delivery, use the Save a Copy workflow. If the actual error names the scratch disk, use the storage checks.
