Premiere Pro adds video to the timeline without its audio
If a clip has sound in the Source Monitor but arrives without an audio clip, inspect source patching before changing audio levels.
If the source plays with sound but only video arrives on the timeline, check the A1 source patch at the far left of the track headers. Enabling another A1 button for track targeting is a different operation. If an audio item is already present, this is no longer a missing-patch problem.

Premiere Pro on Windows and macOS, desktop release. Covers adding a source clip to a sequence; not a silent export, missing media, or a clip that already has a silent audio item on the timeline.
Look for the missing audio item
Before trying an edit, save the project and use an empty test sequence. Insert shifts later clips; Overwrite replaces frames. Neither is a harmless diagnostic in the middle of a finished edit.
Load the source and patch its audio
- Double-click the original clip in the Project panel. If needed, open Window > Source Monitor.
- Play a passage that should contain sound. Confirm that you are checking the source, not the sequence in the Program Monitor.
- In the Timeline's far-left source controls, enable the audio patch labeled A1 for a typical clip. Keep the video source patch enabled as well if you want both parts.
- Position the audio source patch beside the audio track that should receive it. Use a suitable unlocked track in the test sequence.
- Mark a short In/Out range in the Source Monitor and use Insert there.
The expected result is a video item and its audio item on the intended tracks. Play that inserted passage. Adobe's source-patching instructions explain placement; its missing-audio FAQ identifies the easily confused controls.
Read what the test tells you
| Result | Next step |
|---|---|
| Audio arrives after enabling the source patch | Repeat the intended edit carefully in the working sequence |
| No sound in the Source Monitor either | Investigate the source file and its audio before adjusting timeline routing |
| An audio item arrives but is silent | Inspect playback, track mute, and audio routing rather than inserting duplicates |
| Audio plays on only one side | Check the clip's channels and pan settings |
Track targeting governs operations on timeline tracks, including navigation and matching frames. Its selected state does not replace source patching for the incoming clip.
For the one-sided case, use Premiere dialogue channel checks. If a known audio-video source still cannot be inserted, use the Community link in Adobe's source-patching guide. Include the app version and a cropped view of the track headers without private project details.
