OBS recording will not open in your editor: container, codec, and remux checks

Keep the original and identify what was recorded

These are documentation-based checks, not a recovery test. Work with a copy when possible and keep the original until you have checked the entire replacement file. Do not rename the extension and treat that as a conversion.

Separate three different problems

The same .mp4 extension can contain different media formats. An extension alone is not a complete compatibility report. Record the exact import error before trying another output; that makes support requests more useful.

Try remuxing when the container is the obstacle

OBS explains the built-in process in its Standard Recording Output Guide: open File → Remux Recordings, choose the source file, and run the operation. Check the destination so the new output does not replace something you need.

Open the result in your intended editor. Scrub beyond the opening seconds, check the end, and listen to each required audio track. A successful remux operation is only one checkpoint; your editor still needs to read the result correctly.

If import still fails, stop repeating the same remux. Compare the recorded codecs with the editor's supported formats. OBS's Audio/Video Formats Guide separates containers from codecs and explains their compatibility differences. H.264 is broadly supported, while another recorded format may need a different workflow. An incompatible codec may require transcoding, which is a separate operation with time, storage, and quality considerations.

Do not treat every MP4 recording the same way

Regular MP4/MOV relies on finalization. OBS's technical explanation of MP4 recording describes why an interruption before the final metadata is written can make recovery difficult or impossible. Remuxing is not a guaranteed repair for missing or damaged recording data.

Hybrid MP4 and Hybrid MOV behave differently. The official hybrid-format guide dates them to OBS 30.2 and 32.0 respectively. They are designed to retain the resilience of fragmented recording while finalizing into a more widely compatible file. Available codecs still differ between MP4 and MOV, so use the format suited to your editor and recording requirements.

An older warning about recording directly to regular MP4 should not be applied indiscriminately to these newer hybrid options.

Establish a reliable workflow before the next session

Make a brief recording with the exact format, codecs, and tracks you intend to use. Import it into the destination editor before committing to a long capture. Check available storage for both the recording and any converted copy.

If a file remains unreadable, use the OBS Help Portal or your editor's official support. Include OBS and editor versions, format, codecs, and whether the session ended normally. Share a non-sensitive sample only when appropriate, and avoid recovery tools that require uploading confidential footage.
