Compare the voice before and after filtering

Do this off-air. Bypassing a gate can expose room conversations and other background sounds. Note the current filter values before changing anything, and keep the original recording for comparison.

Make the comparison repeatable

Use the same microphone position and a short passage containing normal speech, a quiet phrase, and a pause. Open the microphone's Filters controls and disable existing filters for the first comparison rather than deleting their configuration. Repeat with one filter enabled at a time.

Listen to the saved recordings at a comfortable, consistent playback level. If quiet words are missing even with processing bypassed, do not keep increasing suppression. Check the capture path or consult the microphone-track guide if the microphone is missing entirely.

This comparison is our suggested diagnostic method; it is not a test result from your equipment.

If the Noise Gate causes the cutoff

The OBS Noise Gate reference describes separate open and close thresholds. The open threshold should sit below voice input, while the close threshold should sit above background noise. If quiet speech never reaches the opening threshold, the gate can treat it as silence.

Adjust against your own soft speech, not someone else's universal dB preset. If room noise and quiet words overlap, there may be no useful threshold that removes one while preserving the other. Improving microphone placement or reducing the noise is then a better comparison than tightening the gate again.

If an Expander is involved

An Expander reduces signals below a threshold instead of always cutting them off as abruptly as a gate. OBS warns that an excessive threshold can cut the voice. A lower ratio applies gentler reduction; the Gate preset deliberately behaves more aggressively.

Compare the Expander by itself before stacking it with the original gate. Judge whether beginnings, quiet middle words, and sentence endings remain understandable, not just whether pauses are silent. Preserve values that worked before trying another adjustment.

If the voice becomes thin or distorted

Noise Suppression addresses background noise, but OBS says it is not generally effective against a very loud room. With Speex, stronger suppression can distort the voice. That adjustable level is specific to Speex; do not look for the same control under every method.

Reduce processing or compare it bypassed before adding gain to the damaged-sounding result. These checks do not reconstruct words already removed from a saved recording.

Before the next recording

Restore the intended filters, record another normal passage, and listen through the whole sample. Keep the final settings with your notes. If the fault persists, use the OBS Help Portal with the app version, OS, microphone, filter order, and the comparison that changed the result. Keep stream credentials and private room audio out of shared evidence.
