Google Drive for desktop is not syncing: find the missing change before resetting anything
Compare one affected file on your computer and in Drive, then use the reported error to choose a safe next step.
If a recent edit appears on your computer but not in Drive on the web, keep the local file intact. Save an additional copy outside every synchronized folder when your editing application allows it, and confirm that copy opens. Do not begin by deleting Drive’s cache or disconnecting the account.
In this guide
Google Drive for desktop on supported Windows and macOS releases. Personal and managed accounts; local files, My Drive, and shared-drive permission errors. This guide does not prescribe cache deletion, reinstallation, or sync-mode changes.
Protect the change that has not reached Drive
This precaution matters because Google documents that unsynced streamed changes can exist in a local cache. Clearing it can lose those changes. See the advanced desktop guide.
Compare one file in two places
Choose one affected document or media file, not an entire project folder. Record its name, full local location, and the change you expect to see. Open Drive on the web under the same account and inspect the corresponding file.
Use that comparison to narrow the investigation:
- If the web copy is current, focus on the computer that displays the older version.
- If only the local copy contains the edit, preserve that copy while investigating upload failure.
- If neither contains the expected edit, check the application’s save location before treating this as a synchronization problem.
These comparisons are a diagnostic method, not a guarantee that file names alone identify matching copies.
Read the desktop app’s status
Open Google Drive from the Windows system tray or macOS menu bar. Check the selected account, current activity, and error notifications. The redesigned desktop app uses a sync-status area; earlier interfaces may label activity differently. Resume synchronization if you intentionally paused it. Google’s desktop guide describes these controls.
After saving work, try restarting the Drive app. Check the connection before repeating the test with the same file. Changing several settings simultaneously makes it harder to tell which condition mattered.
Match the error to its cause
| Reported problem | Next check |
|---|---|
| Local disk space is low | Check the disk named in the message. Cloud storage does not substitute for local working space. |
| Cloud storage is full | Check whose storage is affected; a shared file’s owner may need to act. |
| Permission to sync is missing | Ask the owner or shared-drive manager about access to that file. |
| The computer blocks access | Inspect the affected folder’s operating-system permissions. |
These are distinct cases in Google’s sync troubleshooting guide. Avoid deleting project files or granting broad permissions merely to remove an error.
On macOS, folder access can require approval in System Settings → Privacy & Security. Change only the permission needed for the folder you deliberately sync; see Google’s macOS guidance.
Escalate before a destructive reset
If Drive reports a Lost & Found folder, preserve its files before disconnecting: Google warns that disconnecting can remove that folder. Do not run a cleaner against Drive’s data directories.
For a managed account, give your administrator the exact error, operating system, Drive version, and the one-file comparison. For other accounts, use the troubleshooting guide’s support options. Keep client assets and account identifiers out of public forum attachments.
